This lesson follows the Introduction to Ethics lesson. Topics covered in this Utilitarianism lesson include: a brief introduction to ethics, the history of Utilitarianism and Epicureanism, Jeremy Bentham and Classical Utilitarianism, John Stuart Mill, Act and Rule Utilitarianism, a brief introduction to Peter Singer's ideas of Utilitarianism and Applied Ethics, the Categorical Imperative and Kant, The Golden Rule, and Deontology. This lesson was designed for an IB Philosophy class so the rigor and depth is intended for that program but it works for any high school philosophy ethics unit.
