Valentine's Day Collaborative Tessellation Tree. This sweet collaborative holiday tessellation tree project is the perfect whole-class Valentine's Day activity... plus you can sneak a little math into the fun! Designed by Art with Jenny K., it connects the individual with the group using tessellations, and it has a ton of "wow factor" when complete.
Recently, a student told me they’d love to make my “real” classroom holiday tree (yes, I keep a tree up all year and decorate differently for each major holiday!) into a paper tessellation tree like my Christmas tree. I thought—what a great idea!
So…from that inspiration, I created this “sweet” tessellation Holiday Tree for Valentine’s Day.
- It provides a meaningful demonstration that our individuality combines with others to make a greater whole—a wonderful lesson for Valentine's Day.
- Each student decorates, writes, colors, and cuts out his or her own tree-shaped tessellation piece (filled with images for Valentine's Day).
- Then—and here's the best part—everyone's pieces perfectly connect (tessellate) to make a class holiday tree for Valentine's Day, made up of each student's contribution. How fun!
I've done everything I can think of to make this a successful project—I even included a teaching video! It's as easy as write, color, cut, and assemble—with a bunch of fun options for you to make this project fit your specific class size and needs.
It's fun for kids and easy for you as the teacher, and it makes a sweet final display!
Once the pieces are finished and put together, they will make a stunning door decoration, bulletin board display, or festive decoration just about anywhere in your school.
PROJECT DETAILS:
As I’ve designed it, a complete tree will have 25 pieces (but you can easily make many different-sized trees—making it great for any class size!).
- Students will each work on an individual tessellation piece in the shape of a tree—I have included 11 designs (each fitting on a regular 8.5" x 11" piece of paper.)
- They will color their trees.
- They will write what they love on their trees.
- Once their piece is finished, they will cut it out.
- Then, the individual tree pieces will be assembled into a larger, tessellated Valentine's Day tree made up of everyone's individual tree pieces!
INCLUDED:
- Written instructions
- Tessellation teaching video (7 minutes on YouTube—access granted after purchase)
- Heart tree topper and tree base templates
- 11 tree designs (6 upright and 5 upside down)
- "Blank" design with only lights so children can make up their own design (upright and upside down included)
TREE SIZES:
The final tree measures approximately 28” wide at the base of the tree, 40” high without the topper and base, and 50” tall, including the topper and base.
Depending on your class size, you can easily make a smaller tree or a larger tree. You can build trees using 4, 9, 16, or 25 pieces. If space permits or you have a larger group, you can add another row and use 36 pieces, or even more (49, 64,...the whole school!?, details in the resource). Additional licenses are required for more than one teacher to use this resource.
You can use all the designs I’ve included or select just a few. I’ve made it so the pieces will tessellate (connect together), so you can use them however you like!
TEACHING VIDEO:
Before you start this project, you could show my tessellation TEACHING VIDEO to your students. In this video, I give your students a basic introduction to tessellation (so you don't have to)and explain how this project works. Then you can take it from there!
