Understanding Place Value Mat Series 1 - Common Core Style!

The purpose of a Place Value Mat Series is to
• assist students with the development of mathematical concepts and reasoning relating to place value.
• facilitate understanding of new mathematical concepts.
* provide intervention
• graphically organize their thinking and connect new information to prior knowledge.
• provide a visual representation for note-taking on new mathematical concepts being learned.
• prompt reinforcement of mathematical concepts and skills.
• organize and structure information and concepts
• to promote thinking about relationships between concepts.
• allow the student, and the teacher, to identify missing information or absent connections in one's strategic thinking (Ellis, 2004).
• depicting the process of thinking into a pictorial or graphic format.
• reduce and organize information, concepts, and relationships.
• formatively assess students by providing instructors the opportunity to observe student’s critical thinking as they work through problems.
• serve as an enrichment, intervention, small group, or individual instructional/practice tool.
• guide mathematical constructive conversations in which students use mathematical language as they describe their thinking to others.
• differentiate instruction and provide Universal Access to all students.
TO USE:
As a Personal Whiteboard:
• Place the tag board inside of the sheet protractor.
• Place the place value mat on top of the tagboard inside of the sheet protector.
• If using a double-sided personal whiteboard, place a place value mat or the second page of a mat on the other side of the cardboard.

As an Instructional Tool:
• Create a personal whiteboard just like the students
• Project the created personal whiteboard onto the classroom whiteboard/screen/wall (wherever you display items using an ELMO)
• Use as an instructional modeling tool
• Upload PDF for annotation and instruction via tablet and screencast via LCD projector, TV, or other compatible media device.

The standards addressed in this document are specifically for 5th grade. However, the place value mats can be use at any elementary grade level. They may also be used for intervention purposes at any grade level.
