Ugly Holiday Sweaters- Using Chain and Product Rules to Solve Derivatives
Description
A great activity for around Christmas and the Holidays! This activity lets calculus students practice chain and derivative rules but also let loose their inner child with some coloring! Students need to know how to use product rule, chain rule, and basic trig derivatives (sine and cosine).
There are two versions included: You can use this as an individual activity or a partner activity. For the partner activity, each partner completes their 11 problems and color the section of the ugly sweater accordingly. Although partners are solving different problems, each set has similar problems so the partners can decide together if the chain, product, or a combination will need to be used.
If you are using the partner activity, you can print all 22 problems on a worksheet that the two partners share (I put the worksheets in a plastic sleeves and have the students do work on their personal whiteboards). If you prefer the students to have work shown on their worksheet, you can print separate pages for partner A and partner B so there’s more space for solutions. You can also print an individual version where students complete only 11 problems alone.
