Description

Travis the Triangle is so excited to teach your students about triangles! This ADAPTED Travis the Triangle book is a great option for students who are learning to identify two-dimensional shapes. Travis the Triangle shares a lot of different things with readers. For example, the number of sides and vertices he has, that he comes in many sizes and color, and the real-world objects that he looks like.

Suggested uses include, but are not limited to:

  • Cut and paste to identify the triangles. Pages 1-17 need to be printed single-sided or double-sided on the short edge. Students will practice their fine-motor skills by independently cutting out the triangles and numbers on Pages 18-19 and pasting them onto the various pages.

  • Interact with Velcro-based moveable pieces to identify the triangles. Pages 1-17 need to be printed single-sided or double-sided on the short edge and then, laminated and made into a spiral bound book. Place Velcro on the triangles and numbers on the following pages: 2-6, 8, 11, and 14. Velcro also needs to be placed on the back of the triangles and pictures on Pages 18-19 after cutting them out. Students can Velcro the triangles and numbers to the pages as appropriate.

  • Have students listen to a read aloud of the book and then, engage them in a discussion. This might look like orally asking them comprehension questions (e.g., "How many sides does a triangle have?") and having them respond using their mode of communication, or coming up with other examples of real-world objects that looks like triangles.

To ensure students have retained the information that Travis the Triangle shared about triangles, have them complete one of the many scaffolded notes options as described below. All notes were created using the cloze method.

  • Fill-in-the-Blank (Option 1): Students will fill-in-the-blanks by attaching Velcro-based moveable pieces to identify triangles and numbers and recognize real-world objects shaped like triangles.

  • Fill-in-the-Blank (Option 2): Students will fill-in-the blanks by tracing the correct numbers and words independently or with support (e.g., hand-over-hand technique).

  • Fill-in-the-Blank (Option 3): Students will fill-in-the blanks with the correct numbers and words using their mode of communication (e.g., writing, oral identification, AAC device).

  • Matching (Option 1): Students will match each sentence with its correct picture by tracing the line.

  • Matching (Option 2): Students will match each sentence with its correct picture by drawing a line.
