Description

TITLE

Trees, Seeds, Flowers, Plants, and Mushrooms - How Do They Grow? Unit PDF

OVERVIEW

Students learn through reading passages, engaging media (photos, graphic organizers, video and audio clips), and a hands-on activity about tree and plant growth, seeds, flowers and fungi. Assessments, answer keys, Easel Activities, and teacher support are included. The high-interest rainforest theme is used to teach this NGSS-aligned life science unit. Content is engaging and helps meet nonfiction literacy requirements.

GRADE LEVELS AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

This 61 page unit was created for students in grade 1, and it may also be appropriate for students in grades K and 2.  It typically takes about 7 sessions to teach. The number of sessions depends on depth of study and the amount of time devoted to class discussion. The content and media have been designed to encourage class discussion. The timing recommendation is based on an estimate of 20-30 minutes per lesson for grades K-2.

1-LS1-1. Use materials to design a solution to a human problem by mimicking how plants and/or animals use their external parts to help them survive, grow, and meet their needs.

1-LS3-1. Make observations to construct an evidence-based account that young plants and animals are like, but not exactly like, their parents.

2-LS2-1. Plan and conduct an investigation to determine if plants need sunlight and water to grow.
