What educators are saying

Transition words were a struggle for my middle schoolers and this helped them realize how much they needed these words to make their writing flow better!
This was a great resource for my learners to start practicing using new transition words. It helped them learn the right ways to use them in their own writing.

NOTE: This resource uses American English and is not editable.

Students will need to use the context clues within the sentences to discern the correct transition. The multiple choice format facilitates vocabulary acquisition in that even if a student does not know the meaning of the correct word or phrase, he or she can use the process of elimination to get the correct answer, thereby gaining an understanding of the meaning of the transition.

Teacher Tip

Here’s what teachers are saying:

✏️ "We have been working on using the correct transitions in our writing and these were the perfect closings! We practice one together and then they work on the closing themselves- aka these cards. Amazing, quick, and simple!" -Hannah F.

✏️ "These are FABULOUS! My students have language challenges so it's fairly straightforward for them to learn to plug in a transition word, but their challenge is understanding which transition word makes sense in the context, and they often don't pay attention to that. This activity, which to them feels like a game since they can walk around sifting through the task cards, forces them to consider the meaning of each of the transition terms and determine which actually works with that particular sentence. It's excellent, focused practice." -Faye R.

✏️ "Thank you for the resource. Some of my students have such a hard time knowing which transition word/phrase to use. They love to work together with task cards during group work." -Rhonda H.
