What educators are saying

This was such a useful activity! I added a physical component (and assisted students with graphing) by turning the parent graphs into posters and having students walk around the room. They were very engaged throughout the activity. Thank you!
This is a great resource! It helped my students understand the material and kept them engaged. Thanks!

Description

Want your students to really understand how to transform parent functions? This activity allows them to explore how changes in the graph relate to changes in the equations.

This can be used as an inquiry activity to help students discover how the parts of a function directly affect the graph.

This resource includes the following parent functions:

  • Quadratic
  • Linear
  • Exponential
  • Absolute Value
  • Cubic
  • Square Root
  • Rational
  • Constant

The activity begins with exploring how to transform a quadratic function. Quadratics are perfect to start the exploration because the changes to the equation are more obvious than with the linear parent function.

This activity works great for partners or groups. You may want to complete an example or two as a whole class if parent function transformation are new to your students.

A graphing calculator may be useful to check work at the end.

Other ideas for implementation:

  • Cut apart each parent function group of graphs and create centers based on the different parent functions.
  • Assign groups different parent functions and have them present their work to the class. Then, look for similarities in all the groups.

This activity could be used with Algebra I students at the end of the year to give them a glimpse of different functions they will learn about in future classes. Even though students do not have much knowledge of cubic, square root, and rational functions, the activity lets the students explore these topics! It would work great at the beginning of Algebra 2 as well.

The PDF includes the 4 student pages and answer keys to everything. There is also an editable version in PowerPoint (.pptx).
