Description

Help students discover some of the rules for transforming matrices in the coordinate plane. This discovery investigation gives students four problems where they have to apply matrix operations to a coordinate matrix representing a geometric figure. There is one problem representing each type of transformation - translation, rotation, reflection, and dilation. Students are to discover what type of transformation the matrix operation produces.

Also included in this resource is a short reference sheet for students' notes of all of the transformations on matrices in the coordinate plane. A suggested lesson plan for implementation is included.

This activity is intended to be used after students have learned matrix addition, scalar multiplication, and matrix multiplication.
