Description
Tackle the sometimes dry and challenging texts of Transcendentalism with this engaging but rigorous escape room! This activity will challenge your students to analyze excerpts from Emerson's "Nature" and "Self-Reliance," as well as Thoreau's Walden.
This sequential escape room takes students through 4 challenges, which start simple and gradually progress to more cognitively complex tasks.
There are three different options:
- Traditional (Pencil & Paper Escape Room: No technology needed)
- Blended (Traditional + Technology: Google form with clues automates the breakout, but the tasks are hidden around the room like in the traditional escape room)
- Fully Digital (The Google form is all students need. This is also a great option for absent students who are making up the escape room)
Complete materials and detailed instructions for ALL methods are included.
Please be aware that both the traditional and blended escape room require some prep (reading the instructions, printing the tasks, cutting matching cards, and hiding the tasks around the room). If you don’t have prep time, the fully digital option is your best option.
Summary of 4 Challenges:
1. Students will match the tenet of Transcendentalism to the best supporting piece of textual evidence.
2. Students will identify literary devices such as simile, allusion, paradox, and more.
3. Students will answer analysis questions about the effect/purpose of author's choices.
4. Students will analyze a challenging excerpt of Emerson's "Nature."
There is no specific reading required to complete this escape room, but its challenges are comprised of excerpts and examples from Emerson’s “Self-Reliance” and “Nature,” as well as Thoreau’s “Walden.” You may choose to do this as a challenging introduction to these texts (before reading) or as a review/assessment of these texts (after reading). If you don’t have time to dive into these texts but want to briefly cover Transcendentalism, this is a great way to expose students to Emerson and Thoreau in a limited time frame.
