Description

This is the SMARTboard NOTEBOOK file I use with Chapter 2 of To Kill a Mockingbird. You may recall this chapter involves Scout's first day of school. Because of the increased use of nonfiction articles on the Virginia SOL tests, this day's activity involves students reading nonfiction to connect to the novel. This is a full class lesson of exploring the chapter, investigating one of the allusions, connecting literature to nonfiction, making inferences, and assessing comprehension of character identification.

Slide 1: Nonfiction connection - John Dewey (an allusion in the chapter) with a hyperlink and questions about the changes to education inspired by John Dewey.

Slide 2: Nonfiction connection - A short article and photos about hookworms in humans. (Photo of slide not available.) Students are horrified by the hookworms, and every student will be paying attention.

Slide 3: Connection of nonfiction to the novel - Questions about Walter Cunningham and inferences.

Slide 4: Comprehension - Students are asked to categorize characters in a drag and drop activity.

PLEASE ONLY PURCHASE THIS RESOURCE IF YOU HAVE A SMARTBOARD AND THE NECESSARY SOFTWARE.
