What educators are saying

The students loved this and it was so helpful having the worksheets already made. Thank you very much
Loved this for extra support with my Bridges Intervention small groups. Really helped them to understand how to use a number line for subtraction.

Description

"Jump! Hop! Step!" is an open number line strategy for subtracting three-digit numbers. Supports Common Core standards 2.NBT.5 and 3.NBT.2, subtraction within 1000 based on place value strategies.

***Check out the PREVIEW and thumbnails for a detailed view of the strategy!***

This strategy requires students to first draw an open number line ending in the first number of the equation, then expand the second number into hundreds, tens, and ones to determine the number of jumps (hundreds), hops (tens) and steps (ones) back the number line to go. Students then make the moves and arrive at the correct answer. This strategy highlights place value & number sense knowledge as a strategy for solving 3-digit subtraction. Use this strategy as a step to understanding the "math" behind the standard algorithm for subtraction.

Packet contents include:

Strategy Posters: Illustrates the 3 steps in the Jump! Hop! Step! strategy: Color and B&W versions.

Strategy Slips: Smaller versions of the strategy posters. Perfect for attaching to homework, sending home to parents, or for gluing in interactive math notebooks or learning journals.

8 Practice Sheets: Scaffolded, guided practice with the Jump! Hop! Step! strategy. Practice pages are perfect for morning work, centers, homework, assessment, or intervention practice for students still struggling with 3-digit subtraction.
