Originally designed for use in MA 6th grade Social Studies class
In accordance with MA common core standard:
Topic 1: Studying complex societies, past and present
1. Explain how different academic fields in the social sciences concentrate on different means of studying societies in the past and present
3. Give examples of how archaeologists, historians, geographers, economists, and political scientists work as teams to analyze evidence, develop hypotheses, and construct interpretations of ancient and classical civilizations.

What's included:

  • Teacher Google Slides with Do Now activator question
  • Link to video introducing Archaeology to students
  • "I Do, We Do Together, You Do On Your Own" examples in slides to model for students how to analyze artifacts
  • "GRAPES" Cheat sheet to give students information on GRAPES- Geography, Religion, Achievements, Economics, Social Structure. This provides students with background and guiding questions to get them thinking about artifacts and making connections with big ideas of geography.
  • Google Doc worksheet where students can view artifacts and make inferences about their significance.

    Students will be able to:
  • Think like an Archaeologist to make inferences about Artifacts
  • Think critically to connect their analysis to one or more aspects of GRAPES
  • Most importantly, have fun!
