How to use these Thesis Statement Practice Bell Ringers:

These thesis statement bell ringers include various writing activities, including thesis statement examples, argumentative essay topics, and sentence styles to use as thesis statement templates.

These thesis statement activities are broken down into 4 weeks of daily of bell ringers, beginning with simple thesis statement formulas and slowly building up students’ writing skills to help them master thesis statement writing.

These bell ringers reinforce the core elements of a thesis statement using graphic organizers and real student examples.  Students will write, evaluate, and modify thesis statements using different sentence styles, grammatical structures, thesis statement formulas, and argumentative writing prompts.  Students will work towards writing thesis statements independently and collaborating with peers to provide constructive feedback.

To use these thesis statement activities as a practice journal:

Print the version labeled “practice journal” and compile these thesis statement worksheets into a workbook.  Students can work through this workbook at their own pace.  Alternatively, you can assign specific worksheets to students to complete for homework.

To use these thesis statement activities as a diagnostic assessment:

Print the version labeled “bell ringers” and distribute a new thesis statement worksheet to students as a daily writing activity.  You can collect these thesis statement bell ringers each day to evaluate students’ progress.

Students can use the Thesis Statement Checklist as a tool for self-assessment.  This bookmark-style anchor chart will help students determine whether or not they are on the right track with their thesis statements.
