Theme Park Inquiry Mathematics Unit
Set of 6 engaging tasks within the themed unit addressing achievement standards in Year 4, 5, 6 Mathematics - Decimals, Fractions, Measurement (Perimeter & Area) and Money. Each stage has scaffolded tasks with smaller questions to help break down the larger problem.

Students could work in pairs or individually to work through the project in stages. Alternatively, this could be used as an assessment task to conclude explicit teaching or broken into stages and given to students in sections.
Task: You are to create your own theme park that is to be built as Australia’s largest theme park (overtaking those on the Gold Coast). You have $500,000 to spend and have specific guidelines from the company that is funding this project in order to make it successful, practical and exciting for both children and adults.

Year 4
* Make connections between fraction and decimal notations up to two decimal places.
* Students solve simple purchasing problems.
Year 5
* They explain plans for simple budgets.
* They add and subtract fractions with the same denominator.

* They use appropriate units of measurement for length, area, volume, capacity and mass.
* Calculate perimeter and area of rectangles.

Year 6

* Students connect decimal representations to the metric system and choose appropriate units of measurement to perform a calculation.

* They calculate a simple fraction of a quantity.
* They add, subtract and multiply decimals and divide decimals where the result is rational.
* Students calculate common percentage discounts on sale items.
