Description

Students often tend to rush through the writing process, throwing together a rough draft and crying out, "I'm done!" This digital writing process activity is an interactive way to help them focus on truly digging into the writing process and its importance.

Students will spend time working through writing workshop mini lessons and activities in a way that is manageable and meaningful. Instead of writing a lot and being DONE, students will really dig into one sentence, learning how less is more. Quality is more important than quantity when it comes to writing.

As an added bonus, you can allow students to provide feedback to one another digitally. And, students get to "publish" their sentence, which has been run through the writing process filter, to celebrate growth!

TIME FRAME

Because this activity is chunked, you really can space it out over the course of a week. Why? Give yourself time to provide meaningful feedback on a short amount of writing. Give students time to step away from what they have written and come back to it with fresh eyes. Also, let them see how the writing process should play out with a sentence so that they can apply that understanding to a longer piece of writing!

Of course, if you are working on this lesson over the course of a week, it will not fill an entire class period. And, you can complete this lesson in less than a week. It's just the time frame I recommend.

WHO IS IT FOR?

This digital writing process lesson is perfect for 1:1 classrooms, distance learning, and any other situations in which students have access to Google Slides.

Use it at the beginning of the year as an introduction to the writing process, in the middle of the year as a review or to prepare for a larger essay, or at the end of the year when students need to be writing but attention spans are waning.

This activity is intended for middle and high school classrooms and works well with reluctant writers.

  • 5 short video lessons chunked by stage of the writing process
  • A 40 slide Google presentation full of directions for students, work pages, and example responses
  • A PDF student notes page that is optional if you'd like students to record their answers with paper and pencil as opposed to digitally
  • Built in reflection activities to encourage metacognition and transfer to other writing assignments
  • Includes terminology like prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing

IS IT EDITABLE?

Yes, the Google Slides presentation is editable. Feel free to add you own examples and tweak the directions to fit your students needs. The video mini lessons and the optional PDF notes pages are not editable.
