The Ultimate Moon Science Packet {NGSS aligned 1-ESS1-1}

1-ESS1-1: Use observations of the sun, moon, and stars to describe patterns that can be predicted. This packet address the MOON only. Sun patterns are addressed in my Earth's Rotation and Revolution packet.

Use this packet to teach all about the moon! Have your kids make a fun moon fact book and a moonscape complete with a moon rock to take home!

This packet contains:
-21 slides about the moon - I project the images onto my classroom white board to introduce my students to our study of the moon. Slides include photos of the moon and info on its origin,craters, size, distance, maria, astronauts, gravity, revolution, and moon phases. A crescent moon is compared to a banana's shape, a half moon is compared to a half cookie shape, and a gibbous moon is compared to a football shape. This packet can be used to teach students about the pattern of the moon shapes they see in the sky.

-3 student worksheets: 8 moon phases (labeled and not labeled) and predict what the moon will look like worksheet, Draw what you see on the moon's surface worksheet, Moon Facts worksheet

-at-home assignment: Can You See the Moon? Students look for the moon and fill out information. There are 6 moons to fill in on this worksheet. We keep a moon log in class (where we review and record the moon that will be out each night) but this assignment is for the nights or days that students can actually see the moon outside themselves. I don't send home month long moon logs because it is very hard to see the moon every night/day (clouds, too low in the sky, rises after bedtime, etc.) Over the course of one month, my students will definitely be able to see 6 moons. Month long moon log included.

-Moon Phase Memory Game includes 8 pictures of the phases of the moon along with 8 cards with the moon phase words on them. Students play in groups of 4-5 to reinforce learning the phases of the moon. The cards can also be used for a Moon Phase Activity worksheet.

-6 page Moon Fact booklet made of 2 pages of paper (copy back to back to make the 6 page booklet)- simple facts students can read themselves include: moon is a rock, it has craters, picture of moon phases- circle the phase moon is in now and will be in next week, full moon.

-My students LOVED making mini-moonscapes that they could take home! Materials: ½ gallon milk carton (parent request letter included), gray clay (or homemade play-doh), and the cutouts provided (astronauts, rocket, flag). We also made moon rocks and added them to the moonscape – materials: coffee, flour, salt and water (directions provided).

-Moon Craters activity - use flour and some rocks to learn about how craters form on the moon. Recording chart and bar graph included.

-Make a Moongazer! This is a great way for your students to go outside and identify the phase the moon is in. Create a "Moongazer" using just paper and cardstock. Put the real moon in the center window of the moongazer and identify not only which phase it is currently in but which phase it will soon be in!
