Description

This 6 page movie guide with handouts accompanies the film "The Truman Show (1998)".

★★ Check out the full preview! ★★

This guide may also work well as a sub plan for your substitute teacher.

PART 1 - This part consists of 30 comprehension questions in chronological order. I always ask the students to write notes during the movie to help. But if time is limited just complete while watching. Answers included for this part.

PART 2 – Creativity

1. This first task is creating a new character for the show that will directly interact with Truman. Students need to include the name, a sketch of the character’s face, their background, characteristics and personality. They then write how this character is going to be introduced into the show and what their role will be.

2. The second task is writing a fan letter to one of the actors in the show. The idea is that the student is the number one fan for everything Truman. They need to show in the letter why they consider themselves to be number one.

3. Truman’s escape plan. Using what the student’s know from the movie, they need to write down the sequence of events that they think Truman would have done for his successful escape. This includes any preparation Truman would have done before executing his escape. i.e. he had to somehow record his snoring, how did he convince the audience that he was just doing it “for fun”?

This movie is about Truman Burbank, a man whose life is a nonstop TV show. He doesn't realize that his quaint hometown is a giant studio set run by a visionary creator, with the folks living and working there all being played by actors.

How can movies help students learn English?

Learning from movies is motivating and enjoyable

- Sometimes students need a change in style, and movies are generally an integral

part of a student's life.

Movies provides authentic and varied language

- It's always a good idea to introduce students examples of English in real

situations. This includes accents different to your own.

Movies gives a visual context

- This gives the student the ability to interpret the language in full visual context.

To see such visual supports as facial expressions and gestures simultaneously.

Variety and flexibility

- Movies can also act as a springboard for follow-up tasks such as discussions,

debates on social issues, role plays, reconstructing a dialogue or summarising.
