Description

The Tell Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe is a Gothic tale of psychological horror. The insane first person narrator tells his story of murdering an elderly man because of his "evil" eye. This classic short story is a fantastic way to introduce the elements of suspense and horror fiction. Students will learn new vocabulary and will practice reading comprehension as they respond to the narrator's actions. Students will also practice writing short answer responses using the RACE writing acronym as a guide toward using textual evidence to support inferences. Additionally, they will apply what they have learned about suspense to their own narrative writing projects. Students will begin this unit as readers, brought to the edge of their seats by this hair-raising short story and they will finish as authors, of their own horror fiction story. This is a fun unit to teach in October, as Halloween approaches. My students always enjoy it and I hope the same for you students also!

Distance Learning: The worksheets are in Google Slides to use digitally and to easily assign by Google Classroom. For students without technology print PDFs for send-home packets.
