Description

This product takes students on an in-depth look into the real history of the Samurai to challenge many of the myths presented about them in books and movies.

SECTIONS

  • The creation of the Samurai and Shogun systems in the early 1100s showing how a lack of interest from Japan's rulers in Heian encouraged the development of small independent fiefdoms and private armies.

  • The romanticization of the Samurai during the late 1800s and early 1900s as a way to encourage resistance to foreign ideas and obedience to the new imperial government.

  • The rights enjoyed by, and limits placed on, the Samurai and how they would often abuse them or try to get around them.

  • The creation of the Bushido Code in the late 1800s and examples of how Samurai actually behaved.

  • What hobbies it was claimed that Samurai followed and what most really did in their free time.

  • How Seppuku was most often used as a form of punishment rather than a voluntary act.

  • How the role of women from Samurai families changed over the years from active participants and leaders in fighting to being seen only in domestic roles.

  • The influences of the Samurai ideal on the Japanese military and business.

  • Samurai weapons and armor.

  • The decline of the Samurai and their new roles in Japanese government, business, and society.

The file contains seven reading sheets as well as project instructions, interactive notebook and booklet pages, question sheets, and a crossword. There is also a presentation to help guide students through the lessons. As well as the complete worksheet set there are also individual sheets which can be uploaded to your own google classroom site.
