I wrote this engaging, easy-to-organize skit for my school when I was asked to run a character ed assembly for K-4 students. My coworkers and I videoed it and showed it during the assembly. The kids LOVE the superhero theme. This is great for adults or high school students to perform for elementary students. Click here to see our production of THE RESPECTINATORS!
In this resource, you will receive the script, cue cards, other printables for assembly use, and tons of hints for making your own production. I am a music teacher that produces 2-3 musicals each year; I know how to put on a show. I also have a master's degree in English, so I can write well. Those qualities have helped this be a successful script.

Seven Superheroes Spreading Respect across the Planet
An Engaging Screenplay for Elementary Audiences by Megan Heikkila
PLOT: Susie struggles with learning how to show and receive respect. The command center for the Respectinators receives word about her struggles, and the superhero team vows to help her learn. Susie learns through seven situations about each quality of respect.
SETTING: Command Center (we brought random electronic equipment on stage for this scene); Susie’s classroom, school playground, her bedroom, movie theatre
SUGGESTIONS FOR SUCCESSFUL PRODUCTION: I wrote this skit for adults to play all parts, including extras. Instead of trying to perform it live (and to avoid having to memorize lines), we videoed a couple scenes each day. We taped the difficult lines off screen where we could read the lines. In the “SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALS” folder, I have included the cue cards we needed. I would suggest for casting Susie and Kimmy that you get people that can adlib lines instead of worrying about saying each word correctly. That made the filming of our production so much easier. Exact wording is not the emphasis of this skit; it is most important to give the overall meaning. Change the words to make it more natural for each actor if desired.
After Scenes 2-8, we had the superheroes review their word and have the students echo what it meant. They had a short discussion before going to the next scene. This added time and helped students understand better what was going on. I have included “LETTER CARDS” in the “SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALS” folder to be printed front and back so your superheroes can remember what to say.
