Description

Introduce students to the roles and responsibilities, qualifications for, and reasons for being a U.S. President in this Centers or Response Group Activity. Activity addresses the office of presidency and the contributions of key presidents from George Washington to Abraham Lincoln to Barack Obama, and introducing our newest president, Joe Biden.

Avoid lecturing or boring text reading by allowing students to visit 5 Centers around your classroom to gather information on the following topics:

1. Who is the president?

2. What does the president do?

3. What qualifications are required to be president?

4. Why be the president?

5. Who were our most popular presidents?

About this Resource:

All needed materials are provided for the centers, including student handouts and wrap-up questions to follow the activity. This activity includes the content introduced in 5th grade classes for the Office of the President, as well as being a good introduction for the unit for 8th grade U.S. History classes or 9th Grade Civics.

Reading level is appropriate for 5th grade and beyond. Some terms may need to be reviewed for 5th graders (precedent, term, election...).

Also included is a BONUS Matching Card Game to review the core content standards introduced in the lesson. Use this to review immediately after the activity or save for the end of unit review!
