The Polar Express Christmas ELA Unit for Big Kids

It's Christmas! That means it's time for....The Polar Express!

Included in this Christmas themed Polar Express packet are several activities for a variety of learning activities that go with the book The Polar Express. First, you will find a set of 16 Polar Express vocabulary cards. They are in color, but will also print well in black and white. Use these cards for a variety of activities. Print in color for a word wall. Students can write definitions on the back for flash cards. Place in a Christmas themed workstation for writing, alphabetical order, or sorting according to what the words have in common, # of syllables, or part of speech.

Next there are 2 worksheets that have students write the definition of each Polar Express vocabulary word and use the words correctly in a sentence. Also included is a word search, an alphabetical order worksheet, and a making words activity, complete with scrambled word strips and answer sheets. Finally, there is a 2 page vocabulary quiz.

The comprehension portion of this Polar Express Christmas unit has a 2 page comprehension worksheet/quiz; a Who Can Hear the Bells organizer; a Plan A Trip activity, a letter to a Polar Express character page; and a sequence the events of the Polar Express page. Answer keys are provided for everything except the Plan A Trip activity and the letter to a character pages. There are rubrics available for those two activities, though, if you wish to use them.

This Polar Express packet is aimed at grades 4 - 6. It might possibly be suitable for more advanced third graders. I recommend you check out the previews to make that judgement call.
