How to use this unit in your classroom:

    Vocabulary terms:

Introduce students to important vocabulary terms before reading each chapter. Knowing these terms ahead of time can help reading comprehension as they come across the words during their reading.

    Character charts:

There are many characters in The Outsiders. Some characters have similar names, like Darry and Dally. Using character charts will help students get to know the novel's characters, which will help them better understand the story.

Guided reading questions / Book talk discussion:

Book talk discussion questions narrow down student comprehension to the most important aspects of each chapter. These can be used in book talk groups or as an individual check-in. Guided reading questions include more questioning to assess student comprehension. Choose which version best fits your class need or mix them up depending on the chapter. Each can be used as sub plans to review chapter events.

    Timeline activity:

Putting together the events of Soc Bob's death can help students keep track of the circumstances surrounding his untimely demise.

    Writing activities:

Assess student understanding and their ability to write using the various activities. Use these activities as informal assessments or add to a writing portfolio to watch student writing skills improve throughout the year.

    Review games and review sheets:

These activities help make learning fun as students review important events, character actions, and understanding of the novel. In addition, students can use the review sheets to study for upcoming assessments.

    Assessments:

Tests, quizzes, and projects will help determine student understanding of the novel, The Outsiders.

    Feedback from teachers:

    • This was the perfect partner to the novel. I was able to have the students work through vocabulary and comprehension questions, and they loved all of the supplemental activities that went with it too!
    • I used this resource as we finished with the chapters. It allowed me to check that my students understood the chapter and allowed for discussions about the chapter.
    • The Outsiders was the one novel our class attempted to complete online during the Covid shut down. The product was really good, and I received many responses from each of the activities I shared, indicating that the kids enjoyed it!
