Description

Teach students the wonderful book, The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate using this novel unit. Teacher instructions will show you how to teach this novel and include activities to build background information. Activities will assist students in analyzing the novel to understand each major character's point of view, learn new vocabulary, answer comprehension questions, and gain background information on endangered species.

Lessons and activities included in The One and Only Ivan novel study:

  • Building background knowledge: Utilize numerous videos and links to help students gain knowledge about the real Ivan, endangered species, and gorillas.
  • Internet activity: Students will navigate SAFE websites to learn about gorillas, endangered species, the real Ivan, and the author, Katherine Applegate.
  • Vocabulary and comprehension questions: This unit is divided into four parts. Each part contains vocabulary and comprehension questions. Practice context clue skill building through vocabulary terms and assess knowledge through the comprehension questions.
  • Review game - Review vocabulary, figurative language, and comprehension through a fun and engaging review game.
  • Assessments - Include varied questioning comprised of multiple choice, short answer, and extended responses.
  • Culminating Project: Public Service Announcement - included with graphic organizers, research information, and pictures of sample projects
