What educators are saying

This is a great resource. I loved the conversions practice and also the problems that connected to EM spectrum. Such a great way to connect many topics I've taught in class with an engaging film.
Loved using the materials to guide the students through the movies and the concepts of traveling to Mars.

Description

The Martian (2015, PG-13) is about an astronaut who is mistakenly presumed dead and left on Mars. Using science and engineering, he survives. It is an engaging movie that can be used to teach students a wealth of astronomy, physics, and mathematics concepts. Students will love getting to watch it, and these materials will ensure there is awesome learning happening, too! This resource includes MULTIPLE ITEMS to select from to provide well over a week's worth of teaching material and save you a ton of prep time! View the preview file to get a sneak peek. While some items focus on the movie, many are applicable to either viewing the movie or reading the novel.

1) Guided viewing worksheet consisting of 31 questions. This is intended to be completed by students as they watch the film. It does align closely with the movie and ensures students make note of important moments in the film. An answer key is included.

2) Movie guide with character names and roles and and a few key terms defined.

3) Quiz consisting of 15 multiple choice questions related to the movie. Answer key included.

4) 'All About Mars' worksheet that students could complete before watching the movie that instructs them to collect some key stats that can be used to make comparisons between Earth and Mars (distance from sun, tilt of axis, gravity, etc). Answer key included.

5) 'Curiosity' worksheet that gets students a quick introduction to the Mars rover and it's mission. Answer key included.

6)There are links to two relevant articles that could be used before and after watching the movie with ideas of how to use them and instructions on how to access multiple reading levels.

7) There is a teacher's guide / lesson plan resource that includes a list of potential discussion or research questions you might use with students during or after the video, as well as a list of activities for adding add hands-on components and student-created products!

8) Viewing worksheet to accompany the Crash Course Astronomy Mars episode. Answer key included.

9) 16 Square Puzzle for practicing some key Earth Science and Physics vocab that can be applied to the movie (revolution, rotation, atmosphere, gravity, weather, friction, velocity, pressure, vacuum, boiling point, nose cone, ellipse, orbit, sol, day, year, botany, geology, weathering, Newton's first law, Newton's third law). Two variations. Answer keys included.

10) Martian movie conversions and math exercises worksheet! This worksheet uses 3 quotes from the movie as the basis of 14 questions that engage students in conversions and basic math exercises. Answer key included.

11) Newton's Laws worksheet - a template for students to describe examples of Newton's laws of motion they identify from the movie

12) Waves worksheets - questions and calculations involving sound and electromagnetic waves. Answer key included.

13) Linear motion worksheet - calculations that relate speed, velocity, acceleration, and force with applications to Mars. Answer key included.

14) Solar Oven Engineering Lab - Students learn about heat and electromagnetic waves, build a solar oven according to a protocol, and then design and test out a modified solar oven. The student lab handout includes lab procedure, pre-lab questions, and post-lab questions.

Yes, there is a lot here! A great bundle of high quality resources!

This movie can be a great introduction or culmination of a unit, or it could even form the framework of an entire unit! Also great to start or end the school year. It is a well made and engaging movie, and it can be applied to meet a breadth of content in the NGSS for Earth and Space Science and Physical Science. Connections can also readily be made to the Engineering, Technology, and Applications of Science standards. While some resources in this bundle are geared at the movie specifically, others could be used in conjunction with the book as well. This bundle is here to boost student learning and save you tons of time in creating your own material to go with the movie. It's a ridiculous deal, really. You can select the items from this bundle that best fit your students' needs and make this unit your own. I've loved it and I'm sure you will too! :)

Have a great year!
