What educators are saying

The students appreciated the sequencing of the questions, and the brevity of each requested response. I liked how the document looked and how it was organized. Thank you!
This was a great resource to use as we watched the movie. My students were able to follow along and it was easy enough for them to complete based on the worksheet setup.

Description

This is a guided viewing worksheet for the movie The Martian starring Matt Damon and directed by Ridley Scott. This is an amazing movie that is both highly entertaining while also being quite educational. There really has never been a better film for use in the science classroom (while also being easily usable in other courses as well!). This worksheet is comprised of four separate sections. Each section is separated by page and can be added or removed to fit the needs and time constraints of your classroom. Sections are as follows:

Section 1: Can You Find It - Scientific Principles
-This section is designed to engage the students prior to beginning the film. It contains four short answer questions relating to basic scientific concepts. As the film plays, students will have to keep their eyes peeled for examples of several of Newton's Laws as well as an example of chemistry in action. There is no grading key for this section as answers will vary.

Section 2: "Character Key"
-In this segment, students match the names and jobs of each character with a small thumbnail image of them. The purpose is to give the students a proper key for use in the next section as well as to have a reference of what role each character plays within NASA. Grading key is included.

Section 3: "Guided Viewing"
-This is the bulk of the assignment. It consists of twenty short answer questions that follow the plot and events of the film. Questions occur every five to ten minutes and are detailed enough to require attentive viewing on the part of the students. Grading key is included.

Section 4: "Essay"
-This section is comprised of a single in-depth essay question designed to make students think about a time when they had to solve a problem similar to those in the film. There is no grading key for this section as answers will vary.

Thank you so much for looking! I hope you enjoy watching this excellently entertaining film with your students.
