Description

In 1956, JB Peña and his wife moved to the small town of Del Rio, TX, partly for a job as a school superintendent, but mostly to fulfill JB's dream of joining the prestigious, all-white Del Rio Country Club. So when JB is rejected on the basis of his skin color, he is devastated. But his world soon collides with a group of young Latino golf caddies who work at the country club, and JB is inspired by the handmade course the boys built in the country to teach themselves golf. With little experience and even fewer resources, JB convinces the boys to start their own high school golf team, starting them all on a journey where they learn that it takes more than just golf skills to make history. Based on Mustang Miracle by Humberto G. Garcia.

Great for any lesson on: Sports, Latinos, Latinx, Chicanos, Chicano Movement, Segregation, Golf, Caddies, Texas, McAllen, Austin, Mexican Americans, Discrimination, Pochos, Segregation, The Military, The Army, Definitions on what it means to be American and more.

REVIEWS:

Winner of an audience award at the 2023 SXSW film fest, “The Long Game” is an utterly predictable yet thoroughly engaging period drama. - Variety

A reminder for the entire (...) discriminated minority of a town, a quiet cry of: The impossible is possible, and that is the important message of this movie. - Rincón de Cine

If the palpable camaraderie is the bones of the story, the poignant and realistic dialogue is the film’s heartbeat. - Austin Chronicle

Based on the book:

Based on the critically acclaimed self-published book by Author Humberto G. Garcia. In 1955, five young Mexican-American caddies, out of the love for the game, were determined to learn how to play, so they created their own golf course in the middle of the South Texas desert. Despite having outdated and inferior equipment, and no professional instruction to begin with, they would go on to compete against wealthy all-white teams and win the 1957 Texas State High School Golf Championship. The film is "A Field of Dreams" set in the world of Golf. Their inspiring triumph overcame prejudice and broke barriers for many Latino PGA Golfers to follow.—David Garcia - LatinONE PR
