Description

A perfect slightly spooky (and semi-comedic!) tale for the fall season, this classic short story by Washington Irving has been adapted to three different levels to cover needs from upper elementary to middle grades. I have personally used these versions of text with GT 4th graders, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. Having adaptable versions also makes it so easy to differentiate within the same classroom!

Help students dig into and enjoy the rich aspects of this classic poem with this Close Reading Short Story Resource.

Included in all close reading resources you will find the following 4 components:

1) The Text

Engage students in studying the genre of short stories with a high interest, authentic text. Each page has plenty of room to annotate!

2) Vocabulary Frames

Each text has 8 high utility words chosen. These words may be unique to the central idea of the text, essential for understanding, or words that apply to many different contexts, making them worth digging into.

3) Brain Benders: Comprehension Activity

After students have done at least one to two read throughs of the text, assign them their 10 Brain Bender prompts to support close reading and comprehension (similar to task cards).

4) Quest: Student Assessment

As a culminating activity to your close reading routine, end with a text-dependent 10 question quest. Students must rely on their text to help them answer the questions.

Here is a checklist for ALL of the resources, PRINT & DIGITAL you will receive:

★ How are the 3 text versions different?

Each progressive version includes a few minor tweaks including added vocabulary words in the glossary, a few more classically worded sentences, and more compound and complex sentences (these are broken down in the lowest version). The integrity of the plot remains the same in all three texts so that all supplementary activities can be used interchangeably.
