    Description

An editable, Common Core-aligned set of discussion questions, vocabulary resources, and STEM slideshows for use with The Last Cuentista by Donna Barba Higuera.

This super bundle includes a bonus Google doc where all elements are linked in one place. No need to unzip files!

Prompts appear in order of complexity, and simplified language appears in parentheses (delete or modify as needed). The resource is editable, so you can pick and choose which sections will work best for you.

From Goodreads: There lived a girl named Petra Peña, who wanted nothing more than to be a storyteller, like her abuelita.

But Petra's world is ending. Earth has been destroyed by a comet, and only a few hundred scientists and their children – among them Petra and her family – have been chosen to journey to a new planet. They are the ones who must carry on the human race.

Hundreds of years later, Petra wakes to this new planet – and the discovery that she is the only person who remembers Earth. A sinister Collective has taken over the ship during its journey, bent on erasing the sins of humanity's past. They have systematically purged the memories of all aboard – or purged them altogether.

Petra alone now carries the stories of our past, and with them, any hope for our future. Can she make them live again?

    DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

A set of 5-12 prompts for each chapter of the novel (or series of shorter ones), available as individual pages of this doc and as Quizizz games. Find links in the sidebar of each chapter’s literature response and a hack for scoring open-ended questions here

Prompts are split into these three sections:

    • The Comprehending questions ask about plot.
    • The Analyzing questions ask students to draw conclusions about the novel and support their thinking with textual evidence.
    • The Connecting prompts ask students to explore how their own worlds and lives reflect themes and raise questions that surface in the book.

Prompts that ask students about literary devices or elements of storytelling sometimes come with links to relevant teaching resources, including:

    VOCABULARY RESOURCES

    • Illustrated study sheets for each chapter’s list of 5-10 vocabulary words with examples and easy-to-understand definitions. Find links in the sidebar of each chapter’s literature response.
    • A master list of the entire novel’s vocabulary words in a single doc for quick copying & pasting.
    • Kahoot games for each chapter’s vocabulary words. Find links in the sidebar of each chapter’s literature response.
