What educators are saying

I learned as much as my students did! A well researched and informative packet for the month of December.

Description

This is the complete workbook constructed by Reading Through History for the History of Christmas series. It includes 106 pages of reading, writing, and content activities for students and is appropriate for any reading or social studies class above the 4th grade level. It includes lessons on the origins of the holiday, both Pagan and Christian, lessons covering popular characters of the holiday such as Santa, Rudolph, and Frosty, a section on popular literature that inspired the way we celebrate the holiday, such as A Christmas Carol and Twas the Night Before Christmas, lessons covering the history of Christmas songs, foods, pageants, and decorations, the Black Friday shopping phenomenon, and popular TV Christmas specials. With this download, you will never again have to feel pressured about what to do in a social studies or reading class in the month of December. Each lesson provides everything a teacher would need to fill an hour of class. Each lesson includes a series of five reading comprehension questions, a guided reading activity, a student response/short essay question, and a series of questions tailored to the 4th and 5th grade Common Core standards. There are also charts, graphs, matching, vocabulary, timeline, and map activities.

Disclaimer* - While I have never had an issue with this before, there are three lessons in this bundle that cover the history of the evolution of the character Santa Claus (and Rudolph). When the lessons were prepared, I did reason out in my mind what response I would have if a student (who was a believer) asked about the information. My response would be that Santa is so much of a mystery, that these authors and song writers constructed the stories to explain St. Nicholas and the clues/hints they observed. As I said, I have never had an issue with it before, but most teachers do have those highly intuitive students from time to time. I would suggest examining the Santa Claus lesson, the Twas the Night Before Christmas lesson, and the Rudolph lesson and gauging them with what you know of your students. My response on the Rudolph lesson would be the same. The author was attempting to explain the red light in the sky. We would never want to dash any child's imagination or place any teacher in an awkward or uncomfortable situation.

Common Core literature and reading objectives include Key Ideas, Range of Reading, Key Ideas and Details, Range of Reading and Level of Text Complexity, Phonics and Word Recognition, Writing, and Fluency. The packet includes everything a social studies or reading teacher would need to cover four days worth of a standard reading class.
