Description

This is a small group reader's theater is for 3 students. This is the Spanish version and its Spanish name is 'La Gallina de los huevos de oro.' We wrote this one for Easter but it could be used at any time. It is based on an old fable. Fables are a great way to teach students how to look for lessons or morals! The moral of the fable is ‘One who desires more, loses all. One should remain satisfied with what one gets.’

In the script, a poor man is very hungry and hears a chicken outside of his hut. He catches it and is getting ready to kill it when it speaks and begs him not to do it. The hen promises to give the poor man a golden egg each day if he will let it live. The man agrees. Every day the hen gives the man a golden egg and in return he takes good care of it. Eventually the man gets greedy and decides to kill the chicken and get all the eggs at once. But, when he kills it, there are no eggs at all and now he has nothing./ Un hombre pobre tiene mucha hambre y escucha a una gallina fuera de su choza.

There is a writing assignment for the students to do at the bottom of the last page. We use reader's theaters to encourage our students to practice fluency and, as you are aware, students need to speak as well as read Spanish to become fluent. It is a fun way to do something that they need. Most of our scripts are in black and white so they photo copy easily. The problem with many other reader's theaters is that students spend a lot of time waiting for their part. When you have a small group they get more practice and you get less off task behaviors. Our names are Julio Lopez and Melanie Whitesides but our store name is LosDosMaestros and we hope that your students enjoy this script as much as ours did. 3rd graders were fine performing this but they underlined potential trouble words as they read it. If you like this script look for other fables as well as some Aesop tales coming to our store. Let us know how things go!
