The Golden Bull is a story of two young adults growing up in Mesopotamia. Jomar and his younger sister, Zefa, must leave their parents’ home and journey to the ancient city of Ur due to a drought. A touching story about survival, this novel focuses on a theme of coming of age and making one’s way in the world. Jomar finds work working with a master craftsman to create a golden plated lyre (musical instrument). His sister Zefa struggles to find work and is briefly held captive. However, by the end of the book they come to respect each other’s strengths as they find their way in the world.

This novel brings a believable story in Mesopotamia to life to use in a history class or for a novel study on ancient civilizations. At the center of this book is a story of coming of age, overcoming obstacles, and standing up for what is right. The main character comes to acknowledge and embrace his faults and work to make up for them.
