Description

In need of an engaging essay for The Giver by Lois Lowry? Students complete this argumentative speech essay anytime after having read through chapter 12 of The Giver. Students create an argumentative speech that focuses on many of the themes from The Giver. Students write from the perspective of Jonas, arguing to do away with the harsh restrictions of their society. This is a great resource if you are looking for a final project for The Giver.

Included in the assignment is an argumentative speech paragraph writing outline template with an introduction paragraph, three body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph. The speech outline includes detailed instructions for each paragraph, with chapter notes documenting specific scenes and page numbers that students can use within their essays. Included in the outline are transitional phrases to support students with structuring each of their paragraphs as well.

My students truly enjoyed crafting this essay, because it was really fun for them to write from Jonas's perspective. Students empathize with Jonas and the frustrations he experiences as the receiver of memory. I think this is why students have so much fun writing his speech; because they want to bring justice to Jonas and the people in the community.

This is a great end-of-unit final writing assignment or it can be used as a mid-way through the unit writing assessment. This essay is great for teachers who want students to practice structured writing in a creative way. :)

Made on Google Docs. and compatible with Google Classroom. This was created as a digital resource, and it can be printed out as well.
