Description

The Giver Memory Transmission Activity is a fun, interactive classroom simulation activity that will allow students to examine the importance of keeping both painful and joyful memories. In The Giver by Lois Lowry, Jonas receives memory transmission from The Giver that brings him both pleasure and pain. During this activity, students will receive four new memories and consider whether they are important memories to keep. Finally, students will take on the role of The Giver and decide on one memory they think is important to keep.

How The Giver Memory Transmission Activity Works:

Students will be welcomed into the classroom with a colorful poster welcoming them to The Giver’s Annex. The teacher is transformed into The Giver and gives each group of students descriptions of new memories that Jonas will receive. Some of the memories will be positive and others will be negative. Students discuss prompting questions that will have them understand the value of keeping the world’s memories safe.

After students have all the memories transmitted, they will shift into the role of The Giver and transmit one important historical memory to Jonas.

What Teachers Are Saying About The Giver Memory Transmission Activity:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I think that this was an excellent way for my students to dig deeper into why memories are important and to also help them understand more about the reasons the Community chose to keep and get rid of some.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This resource was very engaging for my students. I broke them into small groups where they read the memory they were given together, discussed main idea, and made connections. Great resource for discussion.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I LOVED this assignment. My students took to it so well and truly enjoyed working on it. I was so surprised by how much this was able to make them think and how it enabled them to bring out their own ideas about the Giver and memories. It was especially exciting to see them discuss their own memory they would transfer to Jonas. This helped add to their justification skills and their creative writing skills
