The Earth Day News Report - Small Group Reader's Theater

This is a small group reader's theater is for 4 students. In the script - Two reporters are out interviewing people about what Earth Day is. They select Bob and Sally to talk with. Bob and Sally are both students in class. Bob hasn’t listened very well but Sally has. Sally is able to say what her class is doing while Bob talks about making the Earth cookies or letting it sleep in. Together Sally and the Reporters are able to help straighten Bob out. When they end there are several suggestions made for how to help out when celebrating Earth Day.

There is a writing assignment for the students to do at the bottom of the last page. My 3rd graders were able to use this script but needed some vocabulary front loaded. Those words are on the cover page. I use reader's theaters to encourage my students to practice fluency. It is a fun way to do something that they need. There is only one color picture on the script and that is on the cover. Most of my scripts are in black and white so they photo copy easily and do not waste ink. The problem with many other reader's theaters is that students spend a lot of time waiting for their part. When you have a small group they get more practice and you get less off task behaviors.
