What educators are saying

I did a unit on fairy tales and this was extremely helpful in helping them disconnect from just the Disney version. Students were very engaged and were able to have some great conversations.

Description

The best of both worlds: Student Choice and Comparative Analysis!

Students are guided step-by-step through comparative reading and writing of a Brothers Grimm Story and an Alternative Version. Students get to choose one of seven Brothers Grimm stories to read for their assignment.

There are four steps to this assignment:

1. Students compare and contrast a Brothers Grimm Story to an Alternate Version of the story. All of the versions are provided for through the hyperlinks in the document.

2. Students fill out a compare and contrast chart of the Brothers Grimm Story and an Alternate Version of the story.

3. Students write a paragraph discussing three similarities and three differences between the Brothers Grimm story and the Alternate Version.

4. Lastly, students write a paragraph analyzing the theme in both of the versions.

This assignment takes about 3 (45 minute) class periods for middle school students to complete.

***Some of these stories have some gore. Please be mindful when prepping students. For example, in "Rumplestiltskin," the main character rips himself in half.
