The Boys in the Boat is the true story of the American 1936 Olympics rowing team. Hailing from the University of Washington’s crew team, nine working-class rowers journeyed to Hitler’s Germany to prove the American triumph of the will over his games. The underdog from the beginning, they ultimately triumphed over the German boat rowing for Adolf Hitler and proved that the Nazis couldn’t prevail over American determination.

The Boys in the Boat is a true story, about growing up, wrestling with hope and doubt and coming of age. At its core is a story of dreaming big and going for the gold. At the core of the story is young Joe Rantz, who has lost his mother and family. After losing his mother from cancer, his father remarries and already has young kids of her own. They move away, and Joe Rantz works to raise himself from the age of 15 and put himself through school, living in an unfinished house and earning a spot at the University of Washington on the crew team.

When many would be down and out, Joe Rantz picked himself up, set a goal and reached for his dreams. He helped propel the United States to victory at Hitler’s Berlin Olympics in 1936, while the world was on the brink of one of the most brutal wars in history.
