Description

Movie Plot: This biographical sports drama is about the University of Washington’s Junior Varsity rowing team that makes an incredible run to the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. The JV team was formed by several inexperienced rowers who were mainly just looking to make the team because it came with a part time job and a room on campus. Because of the Great Depression, many people at that time, including the main character Joe Rantz, struggled to make ends meet. After the JV team won an important race against their rival university, their coach, Al Ulbrickson, took note of their talent and hard work and decided to send them to the Olympic qualifiers in New York instead of the varsity squad. The underdog JV team wins the race and they go to the Olympic games in Germany to compete against the world’s best rowing teams.

This particular movie guide is great for your students because it not only gives them questions to complete while watching the movie, but it also includes questions that will allow them to really practice their critical thinking and self-reflection skills. Your students will critically analyze topics about being an underdog, winning, overcoming obstacles, and others.

This 2023 film is rated PG-13 and stars the following actors/actresses: Joel Edgerton, Callum Turner, Courtney Henggeler, Hadley Robinson, Sam Strike, Jack Mulhern, Luke Slattery, Peter Guinness, James Wolk, and others. The running time for the film is 2 hours and 4 minutes long.

***PLEASE NOTE: The Preview File for this movie guide is a mixture of various pages from different movie guides that I have made so you can get a better idea of what my movie guides are like. However, Page #3 is directly taken from this product so that you can get a small taste of what is included within this purchase. All of my movie guides follow the same pattern as the preview file. This product includes only a movie guide and not the actual movie.

This movie guide includes the following:

  • 25 short Answer Questions – These are short questions to be answered while students watch the movie. They are basically used to keep the students’ attention and hold them accountable for the activity. These are usually completed individually but could also be completed in groups.
  • 5 Critical Thinking Questions – These are questions for students to answer after having watched the movie. They are to be completed individually in about 3-4 sentences. They are designed to allow the students to practice their critical thinking skills based on various parts of the movie.
  • 5 Reflection Questions – These reflection questions are to be answered individually after having watched the movie. They can be answered in about 3-4 sentences but are designed to have students relate various parts or aspects from the movie to their own lives. Students are encouraged to share their specific life experiences from their past, present, or future plans.
  • Written Essay – This part is to allow students to individually write a 4-5 paragraph essay about a specific topic that was addressed in the movie. The topic and/or questions to be answered for the essay are stated in the instructions for the activity.
  • Group Activity – This activity is to be completed in a small group and is designed to have students get together, do some research about a topic from the movie, and then discuss and/or present their findings to the class.

All the questions are available in a PDF format for quick and easy printing as well as in a Word format in case you would like to modify some of the questions to the specific needs of your class. A Teacher Answer Key is available for the 25 short answer questions and I have also included a document with instructions and recommendations for using this movie guide in your classes. This movie guide contains four different page borders to choose from to add a little variety to the presentation.

Thank you very much for viewing this document and please feel free contact me if you have any questions.
