The Anti-Litterbug Club Small Group Reader's Theater

This reader's theater was written for a small group of 4 students for Earth Day. In the script,Two children are having a picnic and are going to leave their trash on the ground. A chipmunk tells them they should clean it up and that trash is bad for animals and makes things look terrible. The Litterbug is nearby and wants the kids to leave their trash. It tells them that it is easier to just throw things down rather than throw things away. The kids chose to listen to the chipmunk and gather their trash then they decide to form an Anti-Litterbug Club to help others do the same thing.

At the bottom of the script is a quick write. Students are asked to write how they can help pick up trash. I've had third graders read the script but they needed some extra practice. I write reader's theaters because I find them to be an excellent way to motivate all readers, including reluctant ones, to practice fluency. I write small group scripts because the ONLY way reader's theater works is when there is very little wait time. In scripts with lots of characters, students spend time off-task or waiting to read. This does not help them become fluent. My scripts are mostly black and white so that they can be reproduced on a copier easier and with less ink.
