Description

Are your students ready to write sentences, but having trouble getting started? These Thanksgiving sentence building activities are the perfect first step in writing sentences independently. With this hands-on Thanksgiving writing activity, students will practice using the Thanksgiving-themed picture cards and high frequency words to create a sentence.

This sentence building activity is a hands-on approach to learning how to build a sentence, because it does not involve students actually writing, yet. Students will pick the different word cards or picture cards to create a sentence using the pocket chart. Once students are able to formulate a complete thought or say a sentence out loud, you can try this sentence building activity with them.

Read how to use this resource as part of your writing lesson here: How to Build a Sentence

This Thanksgiving Sentence Building Activity includes:

•54 high frequency words of all different levels

•12 Punctuation Cards

•30+ colorful Thanksgiving pictures

•3 Differentiated writing sheets with space to draw a picture

This sentence building activity works well as a whole group writing lesson first. Use it in a pocket chart and model to your students how to move around words and re-read the sentence to make sure it makes sense. Then, you can add this activity into your ELA center rotations for students to work on together! Once students are able to create their own sentences, they can use the included writing sheets to copy the sentence onto paper.

If your students struggle with coming up with a sentence, these picture cards can help! These Thanksgiving-themed pictures will give students a specific topic to focus their sentence on. You can help them out by using a simple sentence starter, then having students finish the sentence with a picture.
