What educators are saying

Great resource to use as extended learning right before Thanksgiving. The articles are very rigorous and allow in depth learning.
This is a great resource for practice. I love the holiday theme, and it is easy for the students to use and understand.

Purpose of Unit

We created this First Thanksgiving unit because teachers want to teach Thanksgiving in the upper elementary but time is so limited. With this unit teachers can meet the demands of CCSS and have fun with teaching about this holiday and the Pilgrim's history. A lot of Thanksgiving material is geared towards the younger grades with crafts, but this is full of rigor and higher-order thinking skills that the teacher will not feel like he/she has lost any valuable teaching time. This unit integrates literacy skills with social studies. It can be used for at least 5 days of instruction and has lesson plans ready to go!

6 different lessons which include:

• Enduring Understandings

• Essential Questions

• Skills/Learning Goals

• Formative Assessments

• YouTube links about the Pilgrims, Mayflower Compact, and The First Thanksgiving

Printouts included in the unit

• 3 non-fiction Thanksgiving passages:

- Early History of Pilgrims First Thanksgiving

- Mayflower Compact

- First Thanksgiving and Squanto

• Annotation codes and rubric

• Anticipation guide

• 3-2-1 Reading Strategy printout

• QUAD Reading Strategy printout

• 3 Ring Venn Diagram graphic organizer

• Timeline with arts integration

• Prewriting graphic organizer for informational writing
