Great interactive way to identify text structure. My learners were able to use evidence from these stories to defend their answers.

Description

This nonfiction text structure sorting resource is designed to teach 3rd, 4th, 5th, & 6th grade students about the informational text structures: Cause and Effect, Compare and Contrast, Problem and Solution, Description and Sequence . This printable resource provides several opportunities for students to practice identifying the structure of a piece of writing through worksheets & a hands on foldable / sorting activity. It is straightforward & works well in a home environment.

This printable resource includes:

→ “What is Text Structure”, “Why is it Important?”, & “What are Text Features”

→ Text Structure Sorting Activity

→ Practice Worksheets

→ Answer Keys

→ A list of aligned TEKS and Common Core Standards

First, I directly introduce the concept using anchor charts. Then, we fill in page 7 together while referencing the completed chart. I then have them practice this skill (either in pairs or individually) with the text sort. To do this, I have them fold a 12x18 piece of construction paper into 6 columns (1 column for each text structure, & 1 column for the activity title ~ page 9)

*Several extra cards were intentionally left blank. An extension of this sort would be to have students use these to create their own examples.
