    What's in this resource:

★ A PowerPoint with definitions of the skills and examples from the texts

★ Texts that are used in the included PowerPoint for examples of the skills

★ A mini-book for students to use to record notes from the PowerPoint

★ A video to show you (and your students) how to make the mini-book

★ 5 passages with both fiction and non-fiction

    ★ Standards-based questions

    ★ Answer Key

★ Suggestion for making it an engaging review through cooperative learning & competition.

This is how I used this in my classroom:

    1. Students read the texts from the Powerpoint.

    2. Students made the mini-book

    3. The teacher showed the first couple of skills using the Powerpoint while the students took notes in the mini-book.

    4. Students worked in groups on the practice sheets for the 3 skills they just reviewed.

    5. Teacher had already numbered the desks. After a period of time, the teacher called a number. The student in each group who has that number must give their group's answer on a whiteboard (or in some other manner). If it is correct, the group earns a point. If it is incorrect, the group loses a point. It's a friendly competition and the group with the most points after using all the practice sheets wins!

    6. Repeat for the rest of the skills!

Quick, Easy & Fun! Students get the essence of the standards as a final "workout" of their reading skills before the big state test!
