Description

This is a PowerPoint teacher training course to show your teaching staff how to analyze the questions (items) in the exams they have created. They will analyze the tests already completed by students and graded by teachers to see if their examination items were well written, effective at measuring what they set out to measure and to flag up questions that should be reviewed or even removed from future tests.

The analyses are in two parts:

  • Statistical analysis (Quantitative)
  1. Item Facility and Distractor Analysis
  2. Discrimination Index
  3. Cronbach's Alpha

  • Qualitative Analysis
  1. Hansen and Dexter's Guidelines

The course shows teachers how to analyze their graded exams and what they should be looking for (good and bad) in the numbers they calculate and what to look for when making and assessing suitability of exam items.

Primarily the course deals with multiple-choice items (including true/false) as those can be analyzed most effectively, though some analyses can be extended to any questions that have a closed response (i.e. the desired answer is either correct or not correct).

In addition to the PowerPoint, there are printable handout notes for the seminar attendees.

The course can be used for exams at any level and at any educational institution, including schools, colleges and universities.

My school is on a tight budget, so bringing in external consultants to do this kind of training isn't always possible, so I created this course and trained a team of about 15 international teachers at a school in southeast Asia. The session ran for a whole duration of the morning (about three hours) and was well received by the participants.
