What educators are saying

I used some of these sheets with my students as a center as the skill I used them for was narrower than the scope of this pack

Description

Teaching Percentages Using Tape Diagrams:

“Solve problems involving part, percent, and whole,” and do this using “tape diagrams”. Though this terminology is now included in the Common Core State Standards, the amount of materials available on how to teach these concepts is limited. This lack of limited resources for this relatively new standard provided the inspiration for this product. In 37 pages of warm-up problems, guided notes, carefully orchestrated worksheets, and detailed keys, it provides a method to teach students to solve percentage problems using tape diagrams, a method that will stick with them as they move on to more complicated percentage concepts using other techniques in the future. After working through these activities, your students will emerge with a thorough understanding of the meaning of percent, part, and whole, a recognition of the powerful information that can be garnered from tape diagrams, and the knowledge of how to use these diagrams to solve a myriad of percentage computation and word problems.

Specifically, this product includes:

1. Representing Percentages Using Tape Diagrams: Includes a warm-up activity, a page of guided notes, and a page of practice problems. These activities introduce the concept of percentage at a high level, steer the students through a discussion of tape diagrams and why they are useful, and visually introduce percentage by having the students shade in different percentages on tape diagrams.

2. Part, Whole, or Percent? – Includes a page of guided notes and a page of practice problems. These pages teach the students how to determine if they are looking for the part, the whole or the percent, both in computation and word problems.

3. Using Tape Diagrams to Perform PART Calculations: Includes a warm-up activity, a guided notes page, and a page of practice problems. The warm-up activity launches the discussion into the search for the part, the notes page allows the teacher to guide the students, step-by-step, through how to set up a tape diagram to determine the PART, and the practice page allows the students to practice doing so again an again in both computation and word problems.

4. Using Tape Diagrams to Perform PERCENT Calculations: Includes a warm-up activity, a guided notes page, and a page of practice problems. Similar to Section 3, but with a focus on PERCENT, rather than PART.

5. Using Tape Diagrams to Perform WHOLE Calculations: Includes a warm-up activity, a guided notes page, and a page of practice problems. Similar to Section 3 and Section 4, but with a focus on WHOLE, rather than PART or PERCENT.

6. Wrapping up Tape Diagrams: PERCENT, PART, AND WHOLE: Includes a warm-up activity and a two-page worksheet. Focuses on interpreting tape diagrams and also challenges the students to determine whether part, whole, or percent is being sought, and then form tape diagrams to solve computation and word problems involving all three.

Good luck with your use of Percent, Part, and Whole Made Easy Using Tape Diagrams.

Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems, e.g., by reasoning about tables of equivalent ratios, tape diagrams, double number line diagrams, or equations.
Find a percent of a quantity as a rate per 100 (e.g., 30% of a quantity means 30/100 times the quantity); solve problems involving finding the whole, given a part and the percent.
