Description

Unit: Travel and Services

Prior Learning: Students are familiar with vocabulary for places in the community, sports and leisure, recreational activities, foreign currencies, weather, the future tense, and phrases for travel.

Assessment Objectives: Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to:

1. use vocabulary for travel and tourist activities

2. research information essential for travel abroad

3. create a detailed daily itinerary with culturally relevant highlights

4. present a persuasive presentation appropriate to task and audience

5. plan and structure a project by setting goals and maintaining organization

6. present a proposal using appropriate visual aids (This project can be modified to a brochure type format if preferred.)

Standards: Communication, Connections, Communities

L1: Demonstrate command of conventions and grammar when writing and speaking

L2: Demonstrate command of conventions of capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing

L3: Apply knowledge of language functions in order to affect comprehension and expression across contexts

L4: Extract meaning from unknown words and phrases using context clues, word parts, and appropriate references

W2: Write a sequential, organized text to inform

W4: Present information clearly demonstrating consideration of perspective, purpose, and audience

W5: Develop and strengthen writing through planning, revising, editing, rewriting or trying a new approach

W6: Use a variety of media to produce and publish writing and to interact and collaborate with others

W10: Write frequently on a variety of topics for a variety of purposes

SL1: Participate effectively in a range of conversations demonstrating the ability to understand the ideas of others and clearly express your own

SL3: Evaluate a speaker’s perspective, purpose and audience by the use of rhetoric, tone, and non-verbal cues

Materials Used: project description and instructions, rough draft graphic organizer, rubrics, peer observation form, student computers with Internet access for research and presenting

Assessment Overview:

1. Students plan a presentation which includes an itinerary for a trip abroad.

2. Students prepare a persuasive and informative presentation detailing the trip. Presentations should include:

• a clearly identified country, city abroad

• activities which are both entertaining and culturally relevant

• information essential to travel (flight costs, hotel costs, flag and currency, location and climate, major landmarks/attractions, basic phrases)

• supporting details to entice the audience in favor of the trip

3. Students add visuals to aid presentation of the itinerary.
