What educators are saying

This was an excellent resource for my students! They found it very engaging and could do it without a problem.

Description

This 84 page workbook for Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter includes pre-reading materials, fill-in-the-blank chapter summaries, chapter comprehension questions, NINE literature skill exercises, and a final assessment. This novel study / workbook is available as a black + white PDF convenient for printing. Key included.

For the PRINT AND DIGITAL (Google Slides) version, click here.

WORKBOOK CONTAINS:

  • COVER PAGE + TABLE OF CONTENTS (3 pages)
  • PRE-READING WORK (8 pages): Background info on Hawthorne, literary movements, and Puritan life. Glossary of common terms and space for students to add more. Glossary of archaic dialect. Summary crossword puzzle activity.
  • CHAPTER WORK (50 pages): Each chapter (24 + introductory) has a one-page fill-in-the-blank summary with one page follow-up comprehension questions - short answer, T/F, and multiple choice. The summaries work great as study guides or chapter reviews while the comprehension work is great for small groups or whole class discussions.
  • LITERATURE SKILLS EXERCISES (14 pages): There are 9 literature skills exercises throughout the workbook, approximately after every 3 chapters. Exercises teach a concept by providing information and/or examples before students apply the skill to the novel. Skills include elements of fiction (plot, setting, characters, point of view) and literary devices (symbolism, motif, foreshadowing, theme).
  • END-OF-BOOK TEST (9 pages): Character matching, multiple choice, T/F, literature terminology matching, and essay. 70 questions + 4 essay topics to choose from (75 points).

For a quick & simple resource for The Scarlet Letter that's NOT AN EXTENSIVE NOVEL STUDY, try chapter-by-chapter comprehension guide fill-in-the-blank summaries on TRI-FOLD BOOKMARKS or GOOGLE SLIDES. Content from these resources (chapter summaries) are included in the workbook.
