    Balloons Over Broadway

    • This mini-unit is to be used with the book Balloons Over Broadway by
    • Melissa Sweet. This book can be read or watched on YouTube (link provided).
    • CCSS-aligned questions and answer key
    • 3 Writing Prompts (1 Narrative, 1 Informative, and 1 Opinion).
    • Research Sheet (with answer key). On it, students can compare and contrast the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade with the Rose Bowl Parade. They can use the Internet to research and complete the compare/contrast chart. It includes space to answer Who, What, Where, When, Why, and a Fun Fact about these parades as well as what they have in common.
    • Balloons Over Broadway STEAM activity. Students will create their own thematic balloon similar to the ones in the book.

    The First Thanksgiving

    • Reading passage about the First Thanksgiving with CCSS-aligned questions & answer key.
    • 3 Writing Prompts (1 Narrative, 1 Informative, and 1 Opinion).
    • Choice Board Art Activity that focuses on gratitude (with rubric). Students will brainstorm Who, What, Where, When, and Why they are thankful. After choosing one from their brainstorm list, they will use the Choice Board to select an artform to create that represents their selection.
    • Thanksgiving Dinner Table STEAM activity. Students will construct a “dinner table” from paper that can support canned goods.

    Totem Poles

    • Reading passage about Totem Poles with CCSS-aligned questions & answer key.
    • 3 Writing Prompts (1 Narrative, 1 Informative, and 1 Opinion).
    • Create a Totem Pole that represents your family art integration activity (with rubric).
    • Totem Pole STEAM activity. Construct the tallest totem pole using the available supplies.

    Norman Rockwell: Four Freedoms

    • Reading passage about Norman Rockwell’s Four Freedoms The Saturday Evening Post art series with CCSS-aligned questions & answer key.
    • 3 Writing Prompts (1 Narrative, 1 Informative, and 1 Opinion).
    • Research Sheet (with answer key). On it, students analyze and compare/contrast Norman Rockwell’s Freedom from Want with Henry Ossawa Tanner’s The Thankful Poor.     How I Use in My Classroom

    I like to work with other teachers in my school and let the students rotate from room to room. We start by watching the videos about Thanksgiving and doing a Research Activity. Students then rotate to the following activities for approximately 45 minutes-1 hour each. When finished, they come back to their homeroom to do the Ultimate Thanksgiving Party Game!
