Description

TECHNICAL WRITING PROPOSAL ACTIVITY (PART 2) is the second of three parts of this comprehensive, detailed, all-inclusive, and challenging technical writing research activity that can be taught in any discipline. The complete 3-Part activity (Parts 1, 2 and 3) is based on a 4–6-week timetable. Teachers have the option to adjust the complete activity timetable according to their schedules — one or two days per week until the complete activity is finished or implement it straight through for 4-6 weeks until completed.

Here in Education Get Real, we try hard to meet the needs of ALL teachers, so our authors offer activities in separate PARTS and in BUNDLES. Please understand that ALL PARTS OF THIS PARTICULAR ACTIVITY (and others that we offer) FIT THE WHOLE, so if you purchase any of our items separately, you have a fraction of the whole product. In general, most teachers of our materials have written comments comparing purchasing individual pieces/parts vs BUNDLES and have indicated that the BUNDLES are definitely the best buy because BUNDLES include "the whole package" and the price discount is worth it in the long run. Those decisions are always left up to the purchaser -- decisions are made according to budget restrictions.

This research activity is built around the concept of students working in teams (three to four members per team), and all parts revolve around the writing of a FORMAL PROPOSAL. In business/industry, employees are expected to work in teams, so as teachers it is wise to prepare them for life in the "REAL WORLD." The same is true on college campuses -- students work in teams. Students may not like it, but that's a fact of life! To make this activity fun and interesting, it involves students writing a FORMAL PROPOSAL to consider a change to an existing policy, class, sport, event, facility, etc. to make life better for future students in their school OR suggest a change of a policy or a facility in their local community. In so doing, they research existing rules and regulations to determine how to make changes or modifications for the better.

This Technical Writing Proposal Activity offers students the opportunity to think and write in a concise and structured way. It is the style of writing that they will use in most majors in colleges, technical schools, and definitely in the industrial and business world. Our major thrust in today's secondary schools is academic writing preparedness. However, today's teachers of all secondary disciplines are beginning to realize that all styles of writing have a place in preparing students for success in the "REAL WORLD," and that includes Technical Writing.

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN EACH OF THE PARTS AND THE BUNDLE?

  • PART 1 consists of: Introduction to Technical Writing Proposal Activity, Overview, Implementation Tips, National Standards Addressed, and a "Suggested" Timeline (used by the author but the purchaser is free to create their own to adjust to their school schedule). consists of: Introduction to Technical Writing Proposal Activity, Overview, Implementation Tips, National Standards Addressed, and a "Suggested" Timeline (used by the author but the purchaser is free to create their own to adjust to their school schedule).

  • PART 2 (This Part) is very comprehensive and provides students and teachers with forms (in EXCEL and PDF depending upon the needs of the teacher) needed for the completion of this activity: 1) STUDENT FILES: 9 major files with 19 different Excel and PDF fill-in forms; 2) TEACHER FILES: 8 major files with 22 different Excel and PDF fill-in forms ready for the teacher's instructional use. There are 17 written items that students create in PART 2 of the complete activity, many of which closely align to the expectations of business: Title Page, Table of Contents, Market Research Form and Tally Sheet, Interview Questionnaire, Business Card, Business Letter, Interoffice Memorandum, Executive Summary (as part of the Formal Proposal), FORMAL PROPOSAL, Newsletter and/or Brochure, News Release, Wild Card Draw Items, Glossary, Works Cited Page, Web Page, Appendix, and a final PowerPoint Presentation to be given to the class. They will do their research online, in the library, and by interviewing professionals in the community. All of these components support, reinforce, and authenticate their FORMAL PROPOSAL.

  • PART 3 includes terminology and word usage: Vocabulary Words, Vocabulary Tests, Teacher's Answer Key, Words Easily Confused (dual meanings), and a list of Past Tense Action Verbs, all of which can be used not only for this activity but for others as well.

  • The BUNDLE teacher manual includes ALL of the above -- the "EVERYTHING" all-inclusive package!

Before making a purchase, please check the PREVIEWS for all Parts and the BUNDLE to determine what best fits your instructional needs.

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE INDUSTRIAL AND BUSINESS WORLD? Companies use technical writing experts to communicate data in many ways: user guides, training manuals, installation guides, proposals, product documentation, documentation management, and others. Technical writers are highly respected and needed in the profession because their job is to explain (in a plain and easily understood language) systems, gadgets, goods, services, policies, etc. In a company's hi-tech environment of today, clarity of language is vital because words matter, and the bottom line is profitability.

Possessing technical writing skills prepares today's students for the "REAL WORLD" where these advantages are open to them if they have the knowledge and skills to pursue such a career: 1) excellent jobs and career opportunities; 2) high salaries; and 3) the opportunity to gain experience and expertise in the areas production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services — all a faction of business and industry.  Technical documents are always written for someone else in industry: the client and the public. A good technical writer is invaluable in the workplace. Maybe some of your students will take on such a challenge one day in their future. If not, they will at least have developed a healthy respect and understanding as to how such documents are written.

This activity is undoubtedly one that students will never forget! Incorporate this new thought-provoking instructional material in your teaching repertoire. You won't regret it!
